Somalia plans for a Green Zone

MOGADISHU, August 15 -- Somalia's interim prime minister has said the country's capital, Mogadishu, needs a "Green Zone".

Ali Mohammed Ghedi said the central secure district would be similar to that in Iraq's capital, Baghdad. He said work was under way to create the area to protect international workers and "vulnerable people".

Mogadishu has been the scene for months of skirmishes between troops supporting the transitional government and both clan-based and Islamist insurgents.

A local human rights group in Mogadishu said at least 31 people have died in fighting there this week.

More than 400,000 people are estimated by the UN to have fled the Somali capital in the last four months because of instability and fighting.

Mr Ghedi also criticised the UN Security Council for apparently failing to support the deployment of peacekeeping troops to Somalia.

The Danger Behind Instant Messaging

Instant messaging has become increasingly popular lately. Programs like MSN Messenger, Yahoo! Messenger, AIM, etc, are more and more used as a means of communication among users.

However, these programs can pose a threat to users due to the possibility of sharing files, folders, or even entire disk drives.

Malware creators have found an open door in these tools to distribute their creations to an incredibly large number of computers. To this end, they use social engineering techniques to try to trick users into downloading malicious codes, explains Luis Corrons, Technical Director of PandaLabs.

A message claiming to contain some photos is the most common way of spreading this type of malware. It is easy for trusting users to accept and open these files, downloading malware onto their computers.

Both escaped inmates caught

COLUMBIA — A convicted killer was caught in a river Wednesday, one day after using two ladders — one homemade, the other taken from a prison warehouse — to scale razor-wire fences and escape from a maximum-security prison, officials said.

Forrest Kelly Samples, 36, escaped from the Broad River Correctional Institution about 7 p.m. Tuesday with convicted burglar Andrew Lagrand Storey, 27, the state Corrections Department said. Storey was captured just hours after the escape in the nearby Broad River.

Samples eluded police for more than 24 hours, but he got no further than Storey, said Richland County sheriff's Lt. Chris Cowan.

Authorities pulled Samples out of the water close to where Storey was captured. It was unclear where he went during the day or whether a sighting of him getting out of the river near an Interstate 20 overpass was legitimate, Cowan said.

Giuliani: New York experience shows he’d be tough on illegal immigration

GRISWOLD — Republican White House hopeful Rudy Giuliani talked tough on illegal immigration during a trip to Iowa Wednesday, calling for better border security and identification cards that help track foreigners who enter the country."We have to end illegal immigration, no ifs, no ands, no buts, no more talking about it. We had 20, 25 years of talking about it. We have to do it, and I’m the person to do it," he told a crowd during a late morning stop in the western Iowa town of Griswold. His message on immigration is echoed in a new radio ad playing in Iowa and New Hampshire.Giuliani touted his record as a reform mayor of New York City in reducing crime as evidence he can be successful in cracking down on illegal immigrants."I don’t think anyone can discount the tremendous change that was made and the record that I have for bringing security to a place, and safety," Giuliani said.

HP earns top security certification

HP has been awarded a top international Linux security certification that will help government agencies and enterprise customers reduce costs while implementing secure solutions on the company's industry-standard hardware. The certification, called the Evaluation Assurance Level 4 (EAL4+) Common Criteria security certification for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5, applies to HP servers, workstations and notebooks.

CCEVS, undertaken by the National Information Assurance Partnership (NIAP), is part of a collaboration between the National Institute of Standards and Technology and the National Security Agency.

HP has been awarded EAL4+, the highest level of assurance for an unmodified, commercial operating system, for Labeled Security Protection Profile (LSPP), Controlled Access Protection Profile, and Role-Based Access Control Protection Profile for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 on HP Integrity, ProLiant and BladeSystem platforms as well as select workstations and desktops.
